Vlieland → Makkum
After enjoying some days on Terschelling and Vlieland, we had to return to our home port in Makkum. In Vlieland, we installed our wind pilot, renewed the lines on Coelacanth and did some walks on the beach.
Terschelling → Vlieland
After spending some days on Terschelling, we decided to visit Vlieland again. The passage from one island to the other only takes about one hour. Unfortunately, there was hardly wind, when we left Terschelling. Nevertheless, as a heavy southwesterly storm was announced for later that day, we were happy to reach Marina Vlieland early.
Makkum → Terschelling
Finally our holidays came and we went to our home port in Friesland.
Makkum → Terschelling
It’s a tradition to sail to the Frisian island of Terschelling over the days between Christams and New Year. Winter storms howl over the North Sea. The ships present extensive festive lights, and when the year ends, the horns of the big ships welcome the new year sounding all over the place.
Texel → Suffolk Marina
Another passage across the North Sea to the rivers of East England — and their hidden histories. This is the second of our voyages into these beautiful rivers (not counting our first North Sea crossing to Lowestoft and back in 2022). Underway, the wind unexpectedly freshened and Coelacanth was in her element…
Makkum, Niederlande → Makkum, Niederlande
It’s summer and we sail from Friesland over the North Sea into the Baltic, and cruise in the Danish isles south of Funen: Langeland, Strynø, Ærø, Drejø, and Lyø.
Vlieland → Whitby
In June 2023, we set sail from the West Frisian island of Vlieland, bound for the Yorkshire coast. Underway on the North Sea, we encountered a striking algal bloom — Noctiluca scintillans — turning the sea to a strange, glowing red.
Makkum → Esbjerg
In June 2024, we set sail from Vlieland, bound for Norway — but the wind had other plans. Northerlies had built a long, cold swell, and the promised westerlies never came. We bore away, and under a shifting moon and heavy sea, off Norderney, we were finally able to turn north. The second night brought us to Esbjerg, Denmark.
